Schooled

Do you still remember what Kindergarten was like for you “back in the day”? Do you reminisce about those high school years or shudder at surviving the middle school years? And does all of that occasionally resurface as you go to school and teach every day?! If any of that rings true, then you and I are on a new Slice of Life journey for the next month or so!

Slice of Life is a challenge from the blogging community and led by Two Writing Teachers each year for the last 19 years!! This will be my 5th round of writing about topics as mundane as food and travel or as moving as grief and parenting. I am grateful for the outlet and the encouragement, as well as the readers and connections gained.

This year I have been thinking about school a lot. Maybe because I am 21 years in as a librarian and able to see a finish line coming a few laps away. Maybe because my boys have successfully finished their official education requirements and are now in the “school of life” in many ways. Maybe because life has a funny sense of humor which now leads me to loving on a new generation with two elementary girls running around the house! Either way, counting it all up, from preschool to my education to my career, I believe this is my 40th year in schools!! Why not relive a bit of those years with some slices – some distinct memories, many of which are known only to me and a few others – that have helped shape my world of education. Some are not my best moments to be honest. I hope that the sharing leads to catharsis when possible or helps me shed fresh light in relation to my teaching career. Most will serve as a time capsule of sorts while I age and the memories fade. Hopefully it will be funny, shocking, and relatable along the way for any readers.

That’s the goal – 30 (more) days of getting schooled through now & then slices. Feel free to raise your hand and participate (just don’t shout out – I could make a whole post just about how frustrating that quickly gets in class!!). The bell is about to ring, take a seat and welcome to the 2026 Slice of Life Challenge!

  1. This is a great idea for framing your month! I am retiring in June after 40 years of teaching. Couple that with the 16 years of elementary, high school, undergrad and parttime grad work, I have been in school for 56 of my 67 years on this earth! Now you have me reminiscing. I look forward to reading your slices!

  2. This is great! I can’t wait to see some of these stories. I love all of the different lenses in which you are looking at school. Amazing how time changes so much yet so little at the same time. Happy slicing Dustin!
