Dangerous Tuesday

no joke
today I overcame some serious hurdles
shots were fired
spears were thrown
discs were launched
despite the voice
none of this was passive!

for real
today there was running around at full speed
passing the baton when needed
jumping up and over and into whatever brought safety
needing to grab necessary food and water when possible
despite the sound of it
none of this was really dangerous!

the truth
goes around and around
at a track meet
where the oldest events in sports history
happily played out on a gorgeous day
while a was an official for throwing events
(and really did dodge some close throws!)

no joke
for real
the truth is
it was great to get
back to the track –
to feel back on track –
bruises and all!

  1. The structure was fun. I noticed the track references from the word ‘go’. I thought perhaps you had been inspired by the events around the oval, but was surprised that it was actually the subject of the meaningfully crafted poem. You two ‘despite’ pairings are my favorite parts.

  2. I love that first stanza, especially it’s ending: “despite the voice/none of this was passive!” It was so fun to read the poem, trying to figure out what was going on, and then to reread the poem knowing it was a track and field event. I love your voice in the poem.

  3. Great poem. I guessed it was track before you stated it because my youngest son ran track – he was a sprinter! Glad to know, also, that this seemed like an enjoyable event that you had experienced before “pandemic” days and were able to return to it. The sun makes all the difference! The part I like best is the truth goes round and round!
